New diabetes and cancer drugs deliver for Eli Lilly

It is fantastic to see a company based in Ireland doing so well. Eli Lilly, who are located in Dublin and Cork have recorded profits that surpassed estimates. This was due to their new diabetes and cancer drugs. These drugs include: Trulicity, Cyramza and Humalog. Eli Lilly have doubled their Irish workforce in the past five years. It is a good time to be working within the pharmaceuticals sector in Ireland.

Innovation awards: Sothic Bioscience could save horseshoe crab from extinction

A cork based pharmaceutical start up company has developed a synthetic equivalent to limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL). This is a compound found in horeshoe crab blood. LAL is used to detect the presence of pyrogens and bacterial contamination in injectable or implantable medical devices. This innovation will not only bring jobs to Cork in the manufacture and quality control of the synthetic equivalent of LAL, it will also help conserve horseshoe crab numbers in the Atlantic sea.

VistaMed to Create 200 New Jobs in Co Leitrim

More good news for the medical device industry in Ireland. VistaMed produces catheters at a plant in Carrick-On-Shannon in Co. Leitrim. This plant specializes in the assembly of catheters. It is one of two VistaMad plants in Ireland. The other plant, in Roosky, Co. Rosscommon, is dedicated to the extrusion of the catheters.
